Our Story

The Story Behind Kakigen

Kakigen was founded with a simple yet profound goal—to bring the finest handcrafted ceramics from Tamba-Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture, to the world. What began as a leisure trip to Tamba-Sasayama quickly transformed into a journey of discovery. During our first stay in the region, we were warmly welcomed by our hosts, Tsuyoshi-san and Mie-san. Over the course of a few days, we explored the area and were introduced to its deep-rooted history of pottery. We were captivated by the uniqueness and artistry of each handcrafted piece, made not only for aesthetic beauty but also designed to be functional in everyday life.

The beauty of Tamba pottery is truly unforgettable. From the wood-fired kilns to the intricate glazing techniques, we were inspired by how each piece tells the story of generations of craftsmanship. This experience sparked a deep desire to share the timeless beauty of Tamba pottery with the world—whether for seasoned collectors or those new to the world of ceramics.

As our passion for the craft grew, we visited Sasayama multiple times throughout the year. The town, with its rich pottery heritage, not only offered a deep sense of history but also provided a peaceful escape from the fast pace of city life. Surrounded by nature, we found ourselves slowing down and embracing the calming atmosphere, which allowed us to truly appreciate the craftsmanship of Tamba pottery.

At Kakigen, our goal is to honor the heritage of Tamba Sasayama pottery by offering a carefully curated collection that reflects the authenticity and beauty of the region. By working directly with skilled artisans and kiln owners, we provide our customers with the opportunity to own not just pottery, but a piece of Japan’s rich cultural legacy and craftsmanship.

We believe that Tamba pottery is more than just functional ceramics—it's an expression of nature, history, and craftsmanship that brings warmth and authenticity into any home. We hope to share this extraordinary tradition with the world, allowing people to experience the timeless beauty of Tamba Sasayama pottery in their own lives.
